FOOD AS MEDICINE
Why Food? The food-as-medicine approach to daily wellness
Because what you eat every day shapes how you feel every day.
Food as medicine is a simple idea: food can do more than fill you up. It can support your body’s natural balance. We build our products around that idea, so your daily wellness comes from something you enjoy, not another pill.
What's Left Out Matters Too
In food, what’s left out matters as much as what’s added. Shelves are full of “enriched” products that add a vitamin here and some fiber there, yet often still carry common allergens, additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors. We start the other way around: free of major allergens, with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, so every ingredient earns its place.
A different approach
How you take your wellness matters
A pill and a food can carry the same nutrients. What changes is everything around them.
| Capsules & pills | Gummies & chews | Smart3® Food-first | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The moment | Swallowing pill after pill, often with a glass of water | Easy to take, often several pieces per serving | One enjoyable bite or spoonful, no water, no gulping |
| The habit | Easy to forget, easy to skip | Easy to remember, but candy-like and easy to overdo | A treat that's easy to remember, day after day |
| Where it starts | Goes straight past your mouth | Sticky sugars can linger on teeth | Designed to support oral and gut balance from the first bite* |
| What's inside | Nutrients plus fillers and binders | Nutrients plus sugars and gelling agents | Nutrients plus a functional, gut-friendly food base |
| Clean label | Shells and coatings may include gelatin or additives | Often made with added sugar, colors or gelatin | Vegan, gluten-free, free of major allergens, no added sugar |
It all starts in your gut
Your gut talks to almost every part of you, from your mouth and brain to your immune system, skin and metabolism, so caring for your gut health is a smart place to start.

Your gut
Trillions of microbes live in your gut. Keeping them in balance is a smart foundation for everyday wellness.
Mouth
Digestion starts in your mouth, home to its own community of bacteria. It's the first stop on the journey that continues into your gut.
Brain
Your gut and brain stay in constant communication through nerves and chemical messengers, often called the gut-brain axis.
Immunity
A large part of your immune system lives in and around your gut, where it learns to tell helpful microbes from harmful ones.
Skin
Researchers are exploring a gut-skin connection, where the balance inside your gut may be reflected in how your skin looks and feels.
Metabolism
Gut bacteria help break down fiber and other foods, producing compounds that play a role in how your body uses energy.

Frequently asked questions
What does food as medicine mean?
Food as medicine is the idea that the foods you eat regularly can help support your health, not just satisfy hunger. It's a growing approach in nutrition and healthcare, showing up in programs like produce prescriptions and medically tailored meals.
It doesn't mean food replaces medical care or prescribed treatment. It means small, consistent choices add up: what you eat every day becomes part of how you look after yourself. Smart3® brings that idea into a simple daily habit, a functional food designed with a purpose in every serving.
What is pill fatigue?
Pill fatigue is the frustration that builds up when you take several pills or capsules every day. Over time, swallowing pill after pill starts to feel like a chore, and doses get skipped. It's more common than you might think: according to the CDC, about 6 in 10 U.S. adults take dietary supplements, and nearly 4 in 10 take two or more. A food format turns that routine into something easier to keep up.
What makes Smart3® different from other supplements?
Most supplements treat their format as a carrier: a capsule, tablet or gummy that simply holds the active ingredients. Every Smart3® product is built on FoodBIOME®, our patent-pending food base made from plant-based fats, polyphenols and biotic components. It's designed so the food itself contributes to your wellness, starting in your mouth and continuing through your gut.
FoodBIOME® has been tested in two small, early studies in which people consumed it every day:
- Mouth (30 days): the level of cavity-causing bacteria in participants' saliva dropped by about a third, on average.*
- Gut (40 days): participants' gut bacteria shifted, with more of some bacteria linked to a healthy gut and fewer of some less welcome ones. Most participants also showed a lower gut pH, a sign often linked to good bacteria turning fiber into helpful compounds.*
These are early results from small pilot studies, and larger studies are planned to confirm them.
Is this a food or a supplement?
Both, depending on the product. Some are foods and some are dietary supplements, all built on FoodBIOME®, the same functional food base. Check the label: foods carry a Nutrition Facts panel, supplements a Supplement Facts panel.
Is it candy?
No. Our products are made with real cacao and sweetened with tagatose, a low-glycemic prebiotic sweetener, with no added sugar. They taste like a treat, but they're made to support your daily wellness.
Are gummy vitamins bad for your teeth?
They can be. Many gummy vitamins are made with sugar and stick to your teeth, so they act a lot like candy: bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugar and produce acids that can lead to cavities. Dental experts at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine also note that sticky residue can collect near the gums and may even loosen fillings or crowns.
If you take gummies, choose sugar-free versions, take them with a meal and rinse with water afterward.
Smart3® takes a different route. Frequent between-meal eating of foods high in sugars and starches promotes tooth decay. Tagatose, the sugar in Smart3® products, unlike other sugars, does not promote tooth decay.
How do I take it daily?
Follow the serving size on each product's label, usually one a day. It's an easy habit to pair with your morning coffee or an afternoon break.
